The MAMA_MOVE exercise programme, developed at the University of Beira Interior (UBI) in collaboration with CIDESD, was recently highlighted in a news piece on SIC, one of Portugal’s leading television news channels. The report showcased the free, supervised exercise sessions designed for women who are facing or have faced breast cancer, bringing national visibility to the project’s impact on health and quality of life.
MAMA_MOVE offers individualised and specific exercise programmes tailored to the needs of oncology patients, with a particular focus on breast cancer. The sessions aim to improve physical fitness and functional capacity, while also promoting quality of life, self-concept and psychological well-being, in response to the side effects often associated with cancer treatments, such as fatigue, loss of strength and reduced mobility.
In the SIC feature, viewers were able to see some of the training dynamics and hear testimonies that underline how supervised, evidence-based exercise can be safe and effective complement to medical treatment. The report also emphasised that participation in the programme is free of charge and open to new participants from the region, reinforcing its community-focused mission.
For CIDESD and UBI, this media highlight represents an important recognition of the scientific and social relevance of MAMA_MOVE. It strengthens the link between research and practice, showing how knowledge generated in Sport Sciences and Health can be translated into concrete benefits for people living with and beyond cancer.
